How an “Available Now” Banner Generated 8 Extra Service Calls Per Week for One Electrician

A real-time availability banner for same-day emergency electrical calls increased one contractor's inquiries by 40%. Here's exactly what to add to your website and where.

One electrician added a single banner to the top of his website that said "Available for emergency calls today" and tracked what happened. Over the next eight weeks, he received an average of eight extra service calls per week. That's roughly 64 additional inquiries per month—mostly same-day emergency requests.

The banner cost nothing to implement. The insight cost everything to act on. Here's how he did it and how you can replicate it.

Why Emergency Availability Matters

When a homeowner discovers a burning smell from an outlet or a breaker keeps tripping, they search "emergency electrician near me." They're panicked. They want someone today—not next week. If your website says you're booked out two weeks, they call the next person. If it says you're available, you get the job.

The problem: most electricians don't communicate real-time availability. Your Google Business Profile says "Open now" (because you always are), but it doesn't say "I can come out this afternoon." A homeowner has no signal of whether you're available right now, so they call multiple people to find out. Whoever answers first wins.

A banner that says "Available for emergency calls today" collapses that friction instantly. It's a signal. It's permission to call you right now.

How One Electrician Implemented It

The Setup

He added a sticky banner at the top of his website that displays only on certain days or times. Here's how it works:

  • Banner content: "Available for emergency calls today – call [phone] or book below."
  • Display logic: The banner only shows if today is not Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. He reserves weekends for family. He also disables it when he's swamped (manually, through a simple toggle).
  • Design: Bright orange background, contrasting text, urgent but not sleazy. It sits above the navigation.
  • Call-to-action: Direct phone number plus a link to book a 15-minute intro call (so customers could self-serve if they preferred).

He didn't change his actual availability. He simply made it visible.

Tracking Results

He counted incoming calls and form submissions from his website daily. After the banner went live:

  • Weeks 1–2: +6 calls/week
  • Weeks 3–4: +8 calls/week
  • Weeks 5–8: +8 calls/week (stabilized)

Not all of those were jobs he took. But 8 extra inquiries per week meant roughly 2–3 extra jobs from same-day emergency calls. His average emergency job runs $1,200–$2,500. That banner was generating $2,400–$7,500 per week in extra revenue.

Why It Works (And Why You're Not Doing It)

Most electricians think, "If I say I'm available today, I'll be overwhelmed." That's true if you're already slammed. But most aren't. Most have capacity and don't know it—because they're not signaling availability, so they don't get the calls that match their availability.

The banner solves the information gap. It says, "Right now, I can take on urgent work." Customers respond to clarity.

The Scheduling Piece

The banner also linked to a booking calendar, so customers could see available slots before calling. This filtered out some of the calls—people who needed work done next month, for instance, could self-book. The phone line was reserved for true emergencies. That made the 8 extra calls per week even more valuable (more of them were same-day, higher-margin work).

How to Implement This

If you're on a CMS like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace, add a sticky header section with conditional visibility. Most platforms have a "banner" or "announcement bar" feature built in. Set the text, pick your color (orange or red works—it signals urgency), and configure when it displays (maybe disable it after 5 p.m., or on days you're off).

If you're on a more basic platform, ask your web person to add it. It's a one-hour job, max. The ROI is exceptional.

Consider A/B testing the message. Try "Available for emergency calls today" vs. "Can't wait? Call now – we're available this afternoon" vs. "Book a same-day appointment below." Different messaging will resonate with different customers. Track which one pulls the most calls.

Important caveat: Only display the banner when you actually have capacity. If you're booked out, hide it. False promises kill trust faster than honesty ever will. But most electricians are not actually booked every day—they're just not signaling availability, so customers assume they are.

Beyond the Banner

This electrician eventually expanded the concept. He added the availability message to his Google Business Profile ("Open now – available for same-day emergency calls"). He added it to his voicemail greeting ("If you're calling for a same-day service, we can usually accommodate"). He even mentioned it in email signature ("Same-day emergency appointments available today – call [number]").

Each touchpoint reinforced the signal. Customers stopped calling three people. They called him first.

Clarity beats cleverness. Signal availability and watch your phone ring.
