Comparison · Squarespace

Squarespace makes a beautiful brochure.
A brochure doesn’t fill your schedule.

Squarespace’s design-first reputation is earned. The templates are tasteful, the editor is clean, and the launch is fast. For an editorial brand, an artist portfolio, or a single-product e-commerce store, it’s the right tool. For a growing service business that needs to be found in local search, capture every after-hours lead, and automate reviews — it’s the wrong tool, in a beautiful wrapper.

What changes when you switch

Four things a template can’t do for a service business.

Win the local-search query.

Squarespace handles meta tags. Beyond that, you’re on your own for schema markup, location pages, and GBP integration — the actual surface area that wins local search.

Catch the after-hours customer.

60% of small-business calls go unanswered. Squarespace doesn’t ship a missed-call text-back. We ship one on Day 3, before the new site even launches.

Earn the next 50 5-star reviews.

Reviews come from a system, not a request you remember to make. Our review pipeline fires 48 hours after every completed job, on autopilot.

Stand behind the work.

Squarespace can’t guarantee what your business earns. Neither can we — nobody our size can underwrite that honestly. What we do guarantee, on page 1 of every proposal: the build, the ship date, your ownership from Day 1, and your right to leave.

Side by side

NovraScale vs. Squarespace — on what actually matters.

Dimension

NovraScale

Squarespace

Design ceiling

NovraScale

Custom design built for the brand. Distinctive typography, palette, structure — nothing template-shaped.

Squarespace

Squarespace templates are well-designed and that’s also the problem: most Squarespace sites in the same vertical end up looking like each other.

Mobile PageSpeed

NovraScale

Static-first, edge-delivered. Target 90+ on Google’s mobile PageSpeed scoring before staging is signed off.

Squarespace

Squarespace ships its rendering engine, fonts, and image pipeline with every page. Mobile scores typically land in the 40s–60s, even on Business or Commerce plans.

Local SEO depth

NovraScale

Schema markup, location pages, GBP, content built for the searches your customers actually run. All part of the build.

Squarespace

Basic on-page SEO is fine. Advanced schema control is limited; location pages are clunky; GBP integration isn’t built-in. Most Squarespace sites need an external contractor for serious local SEO.

Lead system on launch day

NovraScale

Missed-call text-back, automated review pipeline, CRM, and AI follow-up — wired together, live in your first 7 days.

Squarespace

Squarespace Forms posts to email. Scheduling is a separate Acuity plan. Email marketing is a separate plan. The system is whatever you stitch together yourself.

Customization beyond the template

NovraScale

Anything web standards allow. The codebase is yours; the architecture supports whatever the brand needs.

Squarespace

Squarespace Fluid Engine and CSS overrides go a long way. Beyond that, you hit the platform’s design opinion harder than the template’s.

Blog SEO at scale

NovraScale

Hand-built, schema-marked, structured for the searches your customers run. Long-form content compounds over years.

Squarespace

Blog tooling is solid for editorial blogs. For a programmatic SEO play with dozens of vertical pages, the platform fights you on the structure.

Real monthly cost

NovraScale

One management fee. Site, hosting, lead system, ongoing SEO, support — included.

Squarespace

Squarespace Commerce + Acuity + Mailchimp/Klaviyo + SEO contractor + CRM. Each plan looks reasonable; the total typically isn’t.

What you keep if it ends

NovraScale

You own the codebase, domain, hosting, CRM and content from Day 1, transferred to your accounts at launch rather than on exit. Full terms in Section 5.

Squarespace

14-day trial. No outcome attached. No risk reversal once the trial ends.

If your business is a portfolio, a creative brand, or a single-product e-commerce store with clean inventory needs, Squarespace stays the right call. The comparison kicks in at the moment a service-based small business needs the platform to actually produce customers.

Deep dive 01

Beautiful, but indistinguishable.

Squarespace templates are designed by good designers. That’s part of why most Squarespace sites in the same vertical end up looking similar — the templates were designed for the vertical’s standard use case, and most operators don’t customize beyond the defaults. The result is a category of businesses whose sites are tasteful in isolation and homogenous in aggregate.

We build distinctive sites: distinctive typography, distinctive palette, distinctive structure. The brand reads as itself, not as a member of the same template family as everyone else.

What ”distinctive” looks like in practice

  • Per-brand type pairings — not Inter or Roboto by default
  • Per-brand palette tuned to the category — not the SaaS gradient
  • Custom layout patterns that fit the offer, not the template
  • Hand-built components rather than generic card grids
  • Real photography or original visuals — no laptop stock

Deep dive 02

Squarespace SEO is good enough — until it isn’t.

For a basic editorial blog with a few pages, Squarespace SEO is fine. The meta tags work, the URLs are clean, the sitemap exists. The ceiling shows up when you need to compete in local search: dedicated location pages, fine-grained schema markup, programmatic vertical pages, and a deep integration with Google Business Profile.

We treat local SEO as a first-class part of the build, not an add-on. The site ships with the schema markup, the location pages, the content structure, and the GBP optimization that win the local query — and the management retainer keeps tuning it month over month.

Where Squarespace SEO usually stops

  • Schema

Limited control over JSON-LD; advanced structured-data types require code injection or workarounds.

  • Locations

No native multi-location page system. Each location is hand-built and inconsistent.

  • GBP

No native integration. Posts, review responses, and Q&A live outside the platform.

  • Long-tail

Programmatic page generation isn't supported. SEO-targeted page sprints aren't realistic.

Deep dive 03

Acuity and email aren’t a system. They’re tools you wired yourself.

Squarespace’s Acuity, email, and analytics tools each work fine in isolation. The work of a customer-acquisition system is the integration — what happens when the lead form fires, who gets pinged, how the CRM routes it, what the review request looks like 48 hours later, how the whole loop reports back. Squarespace doesn’t ship that integration; they ship the components.

The Forge Method ships the integrated system. The form, the CRM, the missed-call recovery, the review pipeline, and the analytics report to the same dashboard. The math on whether the asset is earning is one screen, not five.

What runs after 8 p.m.

  • 0:00

Customer calls. You're done for the day. Missed.

  • 0:45

Auto-text-back hits them: "Got your call — how can I help?"

  • 2:10

They reply; the conversation lands in the CRM and your inbox.

  • Next AM

You call back knowing what they need. They didn't call a competitor.

None of this requires you to touch a thing. The system is the system.

What a client said

“NovraScale made my new website, improved my SEO, and setup my Google Business Profile, and it all came together seamlessly. I was completely hands off. I’ve seen a significant increase in new patients finding me online. If you’re a small business owner on the fence about investing in your digital presence, this is who you call.”

Moving over

How we take a Squarespace business and ship a real system underneath it.

01

Audit the Squarespace site.

Free Report Card scans the current site for speed, SEO, and trust issues that are pushing customers away. Two minutes.

02

Plan the system, not the site.

30-minute strategy call. We frame the engagement around what the brochure can't do, with the ROI math against your actual numbers.

03

Run in parallel.

Squarespace stays live until cutover. The Quick-Win Sprint wires the missed-call text-back, GBP, and review automation in 7 days.

04

Cut over, retire the plans.

DNS flips to the new site. Squarespace + Acuity + Mailchimp + the SEO contractor get retired. Monthly management replaces all of it.

Common objections

The questions every Squarespace owner asks.

Designers love Squarespace. Isn't that a vote of confidence?

For portfolio brands, editorial sites, and creative work — yes, and that's the use case Squarespace was built for. The vote of confidence doesn't transfer to service businesses that need local SEO, lead automation, and a system that earns customers without an owner refreshing the inbox.

What about the SEO improvements Squarespace has shipped recently?

They're real and they help. On-page SEO is competent. The structural ceiling — schema control, location pages, programmatic SEO — is the part that hasn't moved much, and it's the part that wins local search at scale.

Can I export my Squarespace content?

Some of it. Squarespace exports blog posts and pages to a WordPress-compatible XML. Forms, scheduling data, and most integrations don't export. We rebuild the site structure with your content; the SEO equity is preserved through 301 redirects and ported metadata.

I love the Squarespace editor. Will I lose that?

You'll lose the click-anywhere drag interface. You won't lose the ability to edit content. The Forge Method ships with an editor for the parts that change — services, locations, blog posts. The structural code stays under version control, which is the difference between maintainable and stuck.
