Your License Number on Your Google Business Profile Could Be Worth Thousands in Extra Calls

Homeowners filter electricians by license status first. Most electricians don't list this on Google. Here's why it matters and exactly where to add it.

When a homeowner searches "electrician near me," they're often filtering by one thing: is this person licensed? Your Google Business Profile is where that decision happens. Most electricians don't list their license number there. That's money left on the table.

Here's why it matters and how to fix it in five minutes.

The Search Behavior

Homeowners are wary. They've been burned before, or they know someone who has. An unlicensed electrician can create a fire hazard, void insurance, and leave you liable. A homeowner who sees "License #12345" on your Google profile moves you from "maybe" to "trusted" instantly. They're not going to verify it then—they will later, after you're hired—but seeing it builds immediate credibility.

Google's review and comparison features show snippets of business information. When two electricians appear in local search results side by side, the one with visible credentials appears more professional and lower-risk. That perception converts to phone calls.

Where to Add Your License Number

Primary Location: Google Business Profile Attributes

Log into Google Business Profile → Edit Profile → Attributes. Google has a "License" field (under Qualifications or similar, depending on your category). Enter your license number there. This is the canonical place Google looks for this information when displaying your profile in search results and maps.

Secondary Locations

  • Business description: Include your license number in your opening paragraph. "Licensed electrician (State License #12345) serving the Portland area since 2010."
  • Your website: Put it in the header or footer (not buried). At minimum, it should appear on your "About" or "Services" page.
  • Google Posts: Create a Google Post that highlights your credentials and license. Re-publish it quarterly so it stays fresh in the feed.

The Verification Question

You're probably wondering: won't listing my license invite people to verify it and find complaints? Possibly. But here's the thing: they'll verify it anyway if you hide it. The difference is you'll have already closed the sale. By the time they check, they've already called, you've already quoted, and you've already built rapport. Your license number displayed publicly shows nothing to hide—and that's the signal you're sending.

If your license is clean (which it should be), displaying it is pure upside. If there's a complaint or two in your history, transparency actually helps—you can explain context, dispute it if inaccurate, or acknowledge and show how you fixed the issue. Hiding the license looks worse.

Pro Tip: Link to State Records

If your state maintains a public license verification database (most do), link to it from your website. You'll be inviting homeowners to verify your credentials—and that kind of transparency is rare in your industry. It sets you apart.

Technical Setup

Google Business Profile updates are usually live within 24 hours. If you're on a website platform like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace, add your license to a schema markup block (if available) so Google can read it programmatically. If you don't know how, ask your web person to add an Organization schema with the license number embedded. It takes fifteen minutes and amplifies your credibility across Google's ecosystem.

Competitive advantage: Most electricians in your market probably aren't listing their license number publicly. That means you're one step ahead just by doing this—and it costs you nothing.

Measure the Impact

Before you make the change, note how many calls and emails you're getting per week. Add the license number to Google Business Profile, your website header, and your Google Posts. Wait two weeks. Check your incoming inquiries again. Odds are you'll see a lift—customers are more confident calling someone they can verify.

Trust is the oldest currency in local service work. Display yours publicly.
