Comparison · Freelancer

A freelancer ships you a website.
A system fills your schedule.

We have nothing against freelancers. Some are excellent. The model breaks down for a different reason: a website isn’t the bottleneck for a growing small business. The system around the site — the automations, the local SEO, the missed-call recovery, the analytics that tell you whether any of it is working — is what produces customers. A freelancer build doesn’t ship with one.

What changes when you switch

Four things that go from ”your problem” to ”ours” on Day 1.

The thing nobody picks up on.

60% of small-business inbound calls go unanswered. The freelancer didn’t set up the recovery system because it wasn’t in scope. We do, on Day 3.

The 5-star reviews you never asked for.

Automated review requests fire 48 hours after every job. The freelancer shipped a contact form. We ship the loop that earns the reviews that drive the searches that fill the form.

The bug nobody owns.

Month-four regressions are a fixed cost in the freelancer model — your cost. They’re a covered cost in ours.

The promise that ties it together.

In writing — ship-date credit, defect warranty, Day-1 ownership, a performance exit. No freelancer can offer that because no freelancer runs the system after the build. We run the system.

Side by side

NovraScale vs. a freelancer — on what actually matters.

Dimension

NovraScale

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

What you're hiring

NovraScale

A team and a system. The site, the SEO, the lead automations, the CRM, the review pipeline, and the managed monthly maintenance — under one contract.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

A builder. Often a good one. The contract ends at launch. What happens to the site after that is whatever you can negotiate or chase.

Strategy before code

NovraScale

30-minute strategy call. We run the ROI math on whether the build pays for itself before there’s a proposal. You decide on actual numbers.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

You bring the spec; they build to it. If the spec was wrong, the build is wrong. Strategy is on you.

Lead system on launch day

NovraScale

Missed-call text-back, Google Business Profile, automated review requests, and the CRM are live in your first 7 days — before the new site even launches.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

The site launches. The system around the site is a separate quote, a separate contractor, or a stack of subscriptions you wire up yourself.

Bug at month 4

NovraScale

Logged in the monthly management contract. Fixed in days, on us. No invoice surprises.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

Email the freelancer. Hope they reply. Hope their rate hasn’t changed. Hope they still remember the codebase. Often none of the above.

When SEO needs to change

NovraScale

Ongoing local SEO is part of the management retainer. New keywords, new pages, schema tweaks, GBP optimization — handled.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

A separate engagement, a separate freelancer, or a Yoast plugin and a YouTube tutorial. Whichever you have time for.

Who runs your site if they disappear

NovraScale

You do. Day 1 ownership of every account; architecture docs and a 30/90/365 Playbook ship with every build. If we ever part, the system keeps running on your stack.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

Often, no one. Most freelancer builds don’t ship with documentation. Replacing one freelancer with another usually means a rebuild, not a handoff.

Accountability if it underperforms

NovraScale

You own the codebase, domain, hosting, CRM and content from Day 1, transferred to your accounts at launch rather than on exit. Full terms in Section 5.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

Hourly or fixed-bid invoice. No outcome attached. No risk on the freelancer’s side once payment clears.

True monthly cost over 24 months

NovraScale

One management fee. Site, system, ongoing SEO, support, hosting — included.

Freelancer (Upwork, Fiverr, friend-of-friend)

Hosting plan + the freelancer’s hourly when something breaks + the SEO contractor + the lead-routing subscription + the next freelancer when the first one stops replying. Adds up.

If what you actually need is a single-page brochure and your business is under $1 million a year, a good freelancer is the right call. We’ll tell you that on the strategy call. The comparison kicks in when the business is past the point where a brochure is enough.

Deep dive 01

The handoff cliff is where freelancer engagements break.

A typical freelancer engagement ends the day the site launches. The invoice clears, the relationship goes cold, and the website becomes a static artifact. There’s no contract for the question ”what do we do next month,” because there was never a ”next month” in the original scope.

The Forge Method is built the opposite way. The build is one phase of a five-phase 28-day engagement, and the management retainer takes over from there. The site isn’t the deliverable — the customer-acquisition system is. The site is the part of it you can see.

What the contract covers

  • You own it

Codebase, domain, hosting, CRM and content transferred to your accounts on Day 1. Not on exit, not on request. No agency holds your logins hostage.

  • We run late

Live in 28 days of assets received, or $150 a day credited against your invoices, capped at $1,500.

  • We stop delivering

The agreement runs 12 months, and if we miss two months running on signed scope you leave with no further obligation. We hand over accounts and answer the next team’s questions for 14 days. Full mechanics: Terms Section 5.

In plain English on page 1 of every proposal. Full terms in Section 5.

What a client said

“NovraScale made my new website, improved my SEO, and setup my Google Business Profile, and it all came together seamlessly. I was completely hands off. I’ve seen a significant increase in new patients finding me online. If you’re a small business owner on the fence about investing in your digital presence, this is who you call.”

Moving over

How we take a freelancer-built site and replace the system underneath it.

01

Audit what's there.

Free Report Card scans the existing site for speed, SEO, and trust issues that are pushing customers away. Two minutes, no call required.

02

Plan the system, not just the site.

30-minute strategy call. We map what to keep from the freelancer build, what to rebuild, and the system that needs to ship around it.

03

Run the Quick-Win Sprint.

Day 1–7: the missed-call text-back, GBP, and review automation come online before the new site is built. The freelancer site stays live until the cutover.

04

Cut over, then manage.

New site replaces the freelancer build. We move into the management contract. You stop being the bug-tracker, the SEO consultant, and the support desk.

Common objections

What every owner who’s hired a freelancer asks first.

My freelancer was much cheaper. Isn't this a downgrade in price?

Up front, yes — by design. A freelancer charges for a deliverable; we charge for a system. The 24-month total typically favors NovraScale once you add the contractor invoices, the lead-routing tools, the SEO add-ons, and the bug-fix-as-emergency line items the freelancer model produces. We run the math live on the strategy call.

I have a good freelancer already. Can NovraScale just run the system?

Sometimes. If the existing site is sound — fast, accessible, well-architected — we can wire the system around it and run management without a rebuild. We'll tell you flatly on the call whether it's worth keeping. Half the time, the answer is yes.

What about a freelancer plus a marketing person?

That's two engagements with no shared roadmap, no shared KPIs, and no shared accountability. When the leads stop, neither one owns the outcome. The reason NovraScale is one contract is that the work is one system.

I tried this before. The agency just outsourced to freelancers anyway.

Fair, and it's one reason every build stays senior-led. Everything that ships under the NovraScale name is built, integrated, and supported by us — not white-labeled. Ask on the strategy call exactly who's doing what. We'll show you.
